Measuring

Our muffles are made bespoke to order to fit each individual bell. Please measure as accurately as possible. We suggest using a length of cord to wrap around the clapper, mark it and measure the length to get the most accurate measurements. Or a dressmaker’s tape measure.

Please find below our comprehensive guide to taking measurements, along with downloadable forms for recording your measurements. Once completed, please email them back to us, or respond to your initial quote email.

Measurements

Clapper Dimensions V2.png

We require five main measurements - A to E - for the manufacture of our muffles. Whilst muffle size can be approximated by the weight of the bell, all clappers are different, and we find that using the circumference data above provides us more accurate measurements. We also ask that customers take a photo of each of the clappers, as this assists us with making them.

Any unevenness or sharp edges on the metal (e.g. when a bell is overdue for quarter-turning, or ridges caused by tuning) can damage muffles. If this is the case, please let us know, and a thicker leather can be used for the contact surface of the muffle.

It can sometimes be difficult to know exactly where to measure from and to for 'C', the height of the clapper bal,l, so we have provided some examples below. The measurement required is between the yellow lines.
